I usually do not touch my phone for one hour before going to bed and instead of that, I used to read paper-based books not E-books. This is because I am a digital nomad now so I can not bring many books with me every time I move to the next place.
It is said that reading an E-book before going to bed, especially the light from the display, undermines the quality of sleep. It will not be good to read something at night by the phone itself. However, even when reading a paper-based book, the light would be turned on so I am not sure how the light affects the quality of sleep. The best solution is not to read books but I do not think about it at this time.
On the premise that reading E-books before going to bed would affect the quality of sleep worse than paper-based books, I think of the pros and cons of reading an E-book following my case, it surely depends on the people though.
The pros of reading E-books
Cost performance
E-books are cheaper than paper-based books. I can put books onto my list on kindle forever.
Physical space
E-books are in the kindle app so that I do not need to bring them anytime.
Check the unknown words for me
On kindle, I can find the words I do not know by just touching the words on the display if the device is connected to the Internet. When I read paper-based books, I used to check them every time by my phone.
The cons of reading E-books
Bad for eyes
Needless to say, E-books would affect badly for my eyes, for example, from the light from the display and scrolling the display.
the difficulty of standing an iPad
My iPad is too big to read a book so it is slightly annoying me. However, regarding this, if I read them on my "Phone" it is going to be fine. My phone is iPhone SE(1st generation) so is not suitable currently to read something so much. I am thinking about buying a new model.
Conclusion
I think which I should choose depends on how much they affect the quality of sleep but I would choose E-books reading. That is why I have just bought "MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS" on Amazon kindle. Looking forward to reading it from now.
I keep on checking how far reading books by phone at night undermines the quality of sleep compared with paper-based books.
